A recent investigation by InvestigateWest has found that although OSHA does not regulate exposure to chemotherapy toxins in the workplace, multiple studies are linking long-term chemo exposure to certain cancers, reports the Seattle Times. InvestigateWest says over time, accidental spills and sprays can have a hazardous effect.
A recent March 2010 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study confirms chemo contaminates workplaces and is being found in the urine of those who handle it, reports the Times. Pharmacists and nurses who prepare and administer the drugs are at the highest risk, according to the study.
OSHA officials told the Times they simply lack resources to heavily regulate this area.
