Plans scrapped for industrial autoclaves in FL city

Residents in Largo, FL, received their wish to not have a large medical waste facility located in their city.

Advanced Medical Disposal wanted to operate two industrial-sized autoclaves that would sterilize about 8,000 pounds of medical waste each day, according to the St. Petersburg Times. More than 400 residents in nearby neighborhoods wrote to their local officials in protest of the plan.

County regulations ban such facilities within a half-mile of residential property zones unless there is a demonstrated hardship, which county officials determined didn't exist in this situation, the Times reported Match 18. The developer of the site had earlier withdrawn its permit request as well.
