Generator fuel annual testing

Q: We just went through a DNV survey at our hospital and we received a written finding concerning annual diesel fuel testing in my generator tank. The code reference will be on the final report, but I would like you to reference the code now. (We use treated diesel and keep the tank above 80%.) I did supply the data sheet for the fuel treatment product, with no success.

A: The DNV surveyor was correct to cite this issue. This diesel fuel test was explained in 2016 when CMS adopted the 2012 Life Safety Code® (LSC). Compliance with NFPA 110-2010 is now required, and section 8.3.8 of NFPA 110-2010 requires an annual test of the fuel in accordance with ASTM standards. The problem is, NFPA 110-2010 does not identify which ASTM standard to use to test your diesel fuel. This is because, at the time NFPA 110-2010 was written, there was no ASTM standard published on diesel fuel testing.
