Expect a lot of surveyor questions when it comes to your emergency management (EM) program, says Bill Mangieri, former EM specialist at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh, NY.
During the hospital’s Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) survey in February, the surveyor focused on each standard and its elements of performance (EP) found in the EM chapter of the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals.
“The surveyor was very thorough in her questioning about the content of our emergency operation plan,” Mangieri says, noting that she used a Joint Commission data collection tool as a guide to review every EP.
Be sure staff members who can answer questions about the six critical areas identified in the standards are present for the EM interview session. You don’t need to be the source of all the information, Mangieri says. Your on-staff experts can provide the specifics to surveyor questions.
Discussion focused on the following issues.
