Tip of the week: Strive for adequate NIMS training -- and download a free checklist

Like with any other safety or emergency preparedness training, you want to be sure that your hospital has enough National Incident Management System (NIMS) representation to cover incidents that might occur during any given shift. You also want to consider NIMS-trained staffing levels in terms of events that last hours or even days.

That said, it makes little sense for every healthcare workers in a hospital to receive NIMS training.

You may want to focus on training people at the supervisory level and above. This approach would allow you to streamline your formal NIMS education efforts, with the idea that frontline staff with NIMS questions could go to their supervisor for guidance.

To further help your NIMS compliance, you can download this free checklist, which is posted on the Hospital Safety Center courtesy of the Wisconsin Hospital Emergency Preparedness Leadership and Marge McFarlane, PhD, CHSP, MS (Risk Control), MS (ENPH), MT(ASCP), founder of Superior Performance Consulting, LLC, in Eau Claire, WI.
