March 3, 2010
In trying to protect others, a nurse jumped in front of a patient with a gun and was allegedly shot three times, according to The News-Times of Danbury, CT.

The alleged incident occurred in the cardiac care unit at Danbury Hospital on Tuesday. The nurse was in stable condition earlier this week.

The suspect then ended up accidentally shooting himself in the leg after struggling with staff, The News-Times reported.

The patient initially pulled the gun from his hospital gown, according to The News-Times. It was not immediately clear who the intended target of the patient was or why he had a gun.

On a related note, one of the country’s leading hospital security experts, Fredrick Roll, MA, CHPA-F, CPP, will discuss how security officers can better prepare for workplace violence in emergency departments at the 4th Annual Hospital Safety Center Symposium, which takes place May 6–7.
