Tip of the week: Be wary of saying you're "mercury free"

Tread carefully with your policies about products containing mercury. If your policy states your hospital is “mercury free,” it may open the door for a savvy Joint Commission surveyor to probe that claim.
In that case, all it takes is the surveyor finding one mercury-containing product to raise doubts.
Instead, it may be a better idea to state your hospital is “mercury safe,” with the idea you’ve eliminated major mercury sources but may very well have unknown items that contain the element.
This approach is similar to saying you have a “latex safe” hospital rather than a “latex free” one.
