Study: Physicians and nurses worry about weak emergency response

EMAIL THIS STORY | PRINT THIS STORY | SUBSCRIBE | ARCHIVES

October 15, 2008
New research indicates that emergency department physicians and nurses have concerns that hospitals may not be able to adequately handle a terrorist attack that uses radioactive materials.

Researchers held focus groups with 77 participants to discuss the scenario of the detonation of a radiological dirty bomb. The results appear in the October 2008 issue of Disaster Medicine and Public Health Preparedness, a journal published by the American Medical Association (you can read an abstract of the study by clicking here).

Among the top emergency management concerns from physicians and nurses, as noted by the study:
  • The possibility of a hospital being overwhelmed by a dirty bomb attack in the community
  • The safety of loved ones
  • Potential staffing problems
  • Emergency readiness and response shortcomings
  • Protection from contamination
