September 22, 2008
Police in Fountain Valley, CA, are investigating an executive assistant who allegedly told them she stole about $234,000 in cafeteria cash from a hospital over a five-year period.

The assistant, who has not been charged, indicated she began stealing small amounts from cafeteria cash registers at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center, police told the Los Angeles Times. She allegedly falsified receipts to cover up the thefts, and over time began to steal larger amounts.

The hospital's finance department contacted police after noticing that cafteria receipts roughly doubled when the assistant went on vacation, the Times reported. The assistant is cooperating with police.
