At least two hospitals in Texas remain closed in the wake of Hurricane Ike:
- Christus St. John Hospital in Texas City is only accepting urgent emergency room cases, and there is no word on when the facility will fully reopen.
- University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston isn’t offering medical care due to utility losses and a lack of access to Galveston. In fact, advanced medical care was nonexistent in the community as of earlier this week.
Given the recent recovery efforts following Hurricanes Ike and Gustav, all hospitals should confirm that their emergency operations plans describe a process for initiating and terminating recovery steps as outlined in Joint Commission standard EC.4.12 (which will become EM.02.01.01 in 2009).
