Hospitals take next steps after Gustav blows through

The recovery from Hurricane Gustav continues to keep Louisiana hospitals busy. State officials estimated that nearly 700 patients might be evacuated this week--after Gustav was gone--because a dozen medical centers didn’t have working air-conditioning, according to the Associated Press.
In other hurricane-related news:
- In hard hit Morgan City, LA--about 85 miles west of New Orleans along the coast--Gustav’s winds and flooding destroyed generators at Teche Regional Medical Center and Franklin Foundation Hospital, reported The Advocate of Baton Rouge.
- About 10,000 patients and residents were evacuated from hospitals and nursing homes in Louisiana before Gustav hit, the Associated Press reported. Six people who were critically ill died from natural causes during evacuations, a state spokesperson said.
- The Interim Louisiana State University Public Hospital in New Orleans kept its trauma center and emergency department fully staffed during Gustav and accepted trauma patients, the university reported.
