Tip of the week: Test dampers on a six-year timetable

When it comes to smoke and fire dampers, hospitals should remember this equipment is now on a six-year testing cycle with The Joint Commission.
The provision comes under EC.5.40, which sets various inspection, testing, and maintenance requirements for fire protection equipment. EC.5.40 will become EC.02.03.05 in 2009.
Hospitals previously had to test dampers every four years, but The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) extended the frequency to keep up with current NFPA standards.
Also under EC.5.40, hospitals that install dampers or on after January 1, 2008, must test the items one year after installation.
