2009 EC standards more clearly define the role of hazard rounds

August 13, 2008
With our Environment of Care for 2009 seminar in Boston coming up September 5, we wanted to share with you some of the in-depth advice and analysis that our expert speakers will discuss.

Within the revised 2009 EC chapter, the familiar hazard surveillance rounds currently under EC.1.20 have moved to the monitoring and improvement standards. You’ll now find provisions for annual and semiannual hazard rounds under EC.04.01.01, elements of performance 12–14.

Also note new wording for the rounds: Environmental tours are conducted “to evaluate the effectiveness of previously implemented activities intended to minimize or eliminate environment of care risks.”

In other words, surveyors won’t just score compliance on finding new risks during the hazard rounds, but also on whether the rounds track how well improvement activities are working.
