New research suggests RFID risks with ICU devices

A study and accompanying editorial in the June 25 Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that radio-frequency ID (RFID) devices can interfere with critical ICU gear and possibly put patients in danger.

RFID is a common technology that transmits radio waves and is used for ID badges and medical equipment tracking.

The bottom line for safety managers is that although it’s unlikely that you can apply the study’s results to your gear and find a clear and immediate danger, the research sounds a warning about potential hazards in your ICU that might warrant investigation.
