The Joint Commission’s upcoming life safety and emergency management chapters should be high on your list of priorities, a commission official told attendees at the National Fire Protection Association’s World Safety Conference last week in Las Vegas.

For example, the life safety chapter “should send a message about the importance The Joint Commission is placing on the Life Safety Code,” said George Mills, senior engineer at the accreditor.

The life safety and emergency management standards will split off from the EC chapter in the accreditation manual on January 1, 2009. Expect The Joint Commission to post online the final versions of these standards within a few weeks, Mills said.
