When it comes to Life Safety Code (LSC) concerns and your Joint Commission plans for improvement (PFIs), timing truly is everything.

If you need an extension for a missed PFI date or an LSC equivalency, make those requests immediately; don’t wait until a surveyor walks in to take action, said Brad Keyes, safety consultant for The Greeley Company, in Marblehead, MA, and a former life safety specialist for The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO.).

“You cannot ask for extensions after the surveyors show up,” said Keyes, who spoke at last week’s Second Annual Hospital Safety Symposium.
